A Ph.D. from University of Zaragoza wins the 2014 Syva Award

A doctoral thesis on Ovine Spongiform Transmissible Encephalopathy was granted the 2014 Syva Award to the Best Doctoral Thesis in Animal Health, endowed with 15.000 €

Laboratorios Syva, in collaboration with the University of Leon, grants every year since 1997 the award to the best Animal Health related Doctoral Thesis. The award seeks to promote scientific education of students and it is considered unique in its field because of its high economic compensation and the prestige earned in its 16 previous calls.

The XVII Edition of the the Syva Award for Best Doctoral Thesis in Animal Health was recently awarded to Dr. Hicham Filali for his work "Altered gene expression and its neuropathological implications in sheep naturally infected with Scrapie.". The thesis was defended at the University of Zaragoza under direction of Drs. Juan Jose Badiola, Rosa Bolea Bailo and Inmaculada Martin Burriel; where he was also granted the Extraordinary Doctoral Award. It is not the first time a Doctor from the University of Zaragoza earns this award, competing with thesis conducted in Spain, Portugal and Mexico.

The Jury for the XVII Syva Award was chaired by Prof. Dr. Juan Francisco Garcia Marin, from the University of Leon, and integrated by professors: Dr. Jose Manuel Sanchez Vizcaino (Complutense University of Madrid), Dr. Jose Luis Muzquiz Moracho (University of Zaragoza), Dr. Anselmo Perea Remujo (University of Cordoba) and Dr. Maria Luisa De Arriba as representative of Syva Laboratories.

The award ceremony will take place on May 20th at 12:00 h, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Leon, located in the Campus of Vegazana. The same day we will have the honor to attend the conference "Realities and expectations of Nanomedicine", by Dr. Maria Jose Alonso, Professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Technology in the University of Santiago de Compostela and winner of 2011 Jaime I Prize for New Technologies.
